Hey Aero, did you try the pressure washer yet? I'm in the same boat you are, they have enough spots in the clearcoat that make them look terrible no matter what I try to do to cure them, so I wanna take the clear coat completely off too. I was also thinking about rubbing compound.
i put the poaint remover on there and let it sat for about 10 mins on each wheel then used the pressure washer and it came right off, i didn't use a huge one either, just one of those u can buy for evryday use at ur house, i think 1300psi, but u can get then end to shoot out the water out harder then the carwash but sure the car wash one would do just fine, most of it came off with ease but some i had to get down with my fingers and pill it off
I removed the old cheap clear coat and recoated with DuPont Imron clear.
Does not yellow, does not peel off, chemical resistant, etc.
I use Imron clear for various projects. Easy to apply but use ventilation as will all solvents but especially Imron and similar polyurethanes as poly solvents are worse for you than regular thinner.
Great stuff! Try it!
Hey there daveladely and welcome to FTE! Thanks for the info.!
I beleive there's a distributor around me in Syracuse. I'll google it and fine out for sure. I love turning old junk into gold again!

I'm guessing a good body shop should be able to get this Imron clearcoat for a guy, not?
Also, I have some pits in the set of OEM alloys I just acquired that I don't thing are gonna come out cause their pretty deep. Will this Imron stuff protect the pits well enough so I don't have to worry about it looking terrible again? I just don't know how deep I wanna try grinding/sanding these pits out.
Hey guys! I've had some OEM and custom aluminum wheels that have had pits, heavy curb damage, corrosion, cracks, well you get it...
I've always sanded and grinded them. I do have a great guy that does the final polishing though. I can't afford the intricate tools he has for getting into the nooks and cranny's of wheels.
If you have a shop in your area, I'd by him/her a cup of coffee and sit for a bit to get some advice on what he/she recommends you do, before you bring them in for final polishing.
The Imron coating isn't a new product. I wasn't sure if it was a long lasting product. It's always nice to know that products out there are being tested with good results by us common folk!
