I put a Ford Motorsports E303 cam in my 95 F150 5.0. The motor is actually from a 1989 Crown Vic. Having the non HO firing order, I wanted a new cam with the right order. After reviewing the large selection of aftermarket cams, I decided on the E303. I thought "What the hell, the truck is mass air, it should be able to compensate for the added lift and duration!"
Not so. My problem is that the truck won't idle. The idle swings from 300-1500 rpm constantly. I tried replacing the IAC motor with, no luck. There are no vacuum leaks that I've been able to find. The truck is also running rich(tried replacing O2 sensor, no luck). No codes on my scanner. Truck has great power from 1500rpm on up(which is the powerband advertised for this cam).
Does someone make a chip for my truck that can help me. If not, I'm going to put the original cam back in.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Karl Brandel
It's not the cam. The E303/Crane 2040 is a very mild performance cam with a good, but nicely lumpy idle. With no codes on the scanner, it's not likely to be a sensor/control issue. Any chance you've got an intake leak, that's always good for a poor idle?
This is the cam I have in my Mustang. The idle surge is tricky to tune out but it can be done. First, bump the idle speed up to about 750-800 rpm. Reset the TPS to less than .95 volt. You may also have to rotate the mass air meter, I did. You may even need an adjustable F/P regulator and try playing around with that.
Don't give up on it, it will work. Now you just need different heads, bigger injectors, headers, dual exhaust...
