WHAT TRUCK?????
there are three different body styles the IDI was used in, and two different ignition systems. without knowing what you are working on, we can not help you fix it.

when you turn the key to start, do you get voltage to the small wire on the fender mount starter relay?
if yes, than either the fender relay is bad, the cable from relay to starter is bad, or the starter is bad.
if no voltage on the little wire, than it is either a bad neutral safety switch on automatic trans, bad clutch interrupter switch on manual trans, bad ignition actuator in the column, or a bad ignition switch.
usually on the 83-91 trucks it is a bad actuator int he column.
when turning the key to start, you should feel a slight resistance, and when letting th ekey go, it should return to run position.
both large terminals, or the battery side large one to the small one?
if it will start after jumping the large to small terminal, than you need to go inside the truck to find where the problem is.
first check for a slight resistance in the key between run and start..
reason i did not ask is because the neutral safety and clutch interrupter switch very rarely just "GO". they will give you warnings they are failing by sometimes working, sometimes not. a starter relay or ignition actuator will either work or not. there is no sometimes with them.
The clutch switch on the '83-'86 trucks actually goes out of adjustment very easily. It's a really cheesy design compared to the later switch mounted on the pushrod. And if it's an automatic, the OP's truck is a C6, which, IIRC, has the neutral switch on the column, which is always susceptible to maladjustment.
