Charging system

Hi, I just bought my first diesel pickup. 1985 F350 6.9. Seems the batteries are not getting a charge. I had the alternator tested and it is good. There is only two wires going to the alternator. Big one for the battery, and another that plugs into the alternator. There is a space for another wire in this plug but there is none. Should there be? I have not been able to find a scematic for the wiring. Can someone help me?
Thanks, Ricky.

I have an EVTM here for a 1986 but it shows an internally regulated alternator with 4 wires going to it. It sounds like yours is externally regulated so I would look for an external regulator, maybe mounted near the battery on the core support or the fender well and test it.

My diagrams show the conventional older ext regulated alt and it does show one that must be internally regulated with just one black/orange wire coming out of it. It sounds like yours is the single wire alt, so I would check the connections of this single wire all the way to the battery. And make sure the alt is grounded properly through the brackets to the engine(should be but you never know). I would also make sure I revved the engine a little to try to get it to start charging, since these internal one wire alt's are hard to get started charging sometimes. Check the voltage on your battery with the truck off, and then with the truck running, and you should see a higher voltage level if the alt is working.
