Cool Excursion Fury

So I bought this excursion a month ago knowing it needed some work. So I immediately dropped it at a shop the next day for exhaust manifold gaskets. It sat for 3 weeks at the first shop where they could only remove one manifold and a couple studs. The rest were seized and broke off. So I finally had enough after I kept driving by and seeing it parked outside with no progress being made. So I had it towed to another shop. The immediately got the other manifold off and about half the studs out but half broke off flush or recessed. Now they're telling me 20hrs + to drill out so they want to pull the heads. They gave me a set price so that's on them but I needed this vehicle for a specific job this coming weekend so it's more of a time issue now. I never imagined it would take over a month to get this resolved. Plus I'm a little worried about anyone pulling heads as I know with my luck something will go wrong a few days later or while I'm 8 states away. Needless to say all my new parts are just sitting in the truck waiting while we sit at this crossroads trying to figure out the next step.

A competent shop will have no trouble getting it all back together for you by the end of the week. But you don't sound as though you took it to a competent shop.

Well normally I wouldn't have taken it to the shop but I've been pretty much out of town for 2 months. The first shop I went to was walking distance to home so I picked it based on proximity and it did have good Google reviews. The 2nd shop is a chain that I've been to before and has always finished everything early but this is the first job everyone seems to be struggling on. Just out of curiosity has anyone ever removed the heads for this job because I know I haven't on other vehicles.

I've heard of people doing it but most people I believe leave the heads on without issues.

Alright well he called me back and said they got lucky and made progress so 3 studs left between the 2 sides. I hope they can get the last 3.

IMO a shop with a good mechanic and a good right angle drill can get the studs out without removing the heads.

You may want to remove the inner fender wheels (if you haven't already) to gain better access.

Update: They told me they were finally able to complete it so they are doing a thing or two more so it can pass inspection and I can hopefully pick up tomorrow.

This....

I work at a dealership that used to pull heads when they were broken off. I started and now they haven't pulled a head in 2 years.

The wonders of working in custom exhaust shops for 6 years of my career... lol
