Keycode door lock use cases

Okay folks, I changed my keycode but for the life of me am struggling with why I should lock my keys in my truck and just use the door code.

For some reason, I have a fear of having my keys locked in my truck and the electronic door code failing and not be able to get into it.

Do any of you guys use this and if so, when/how?

I'm with you. That would be me standing in the freezing rain, looking at my keys in the locked trucks console, with a dead battery.

Its great when you go down to beach or go to the amusement park so you dont have to carry them around. Run to home depot and have a non-chip key made and get a hide-a-key and store it under the truck just incase the key-code did not work for some weird reason. the non- chip key will only be able to unlock the door. It wont start the truck. I actually have my spare chipped key hidden in the truck incase i lost the key away from my house. Im actually going to run out to home depot and get a non-chipped key becasue now you got me thinking that the key code could fail. haha

Like gust rider said it nice not having to carry keys, like on beach ect where no were to lock ur keys, I had it on my 2007 f150 and loved it. Never had battery go dead but like said above I always have a spare key hidden on truck somewhere. I Missue not having this feature on my 2012 powerstroke. Another use is if have to run into store real quick can leave truck running and locked no need to have remote start to leave it running while locked.

I use the key pad on my 2015 all the time. I also purchased an add-on key pad for the passenger door.

I have full coverage insurance for this reason. A call to a locksmith or AAA for a tow or assistance. I also have a copy of the key code tag that came with my truck on my cell phone.

Also, you can not change the programmed key pad code but add codes to it. Later model allows two additional entry codes. Later model trucks such as your 2016 will display the key pad code Ford programmed in your truck if you have two keys handy. The method is in your owner's manual.

On a side note, the key pad code displayed by the two key method may NOT match the key pad code on the card you received with your truck. If your key pad code was 01464. The two key method might return 92353. This is the same as 01464 since there are TWO(2) numbers on each button and only 5 buttons. 1-2, 3-4, 5-6, 7-8, 9-0

I know someone that always locked his keys in the truck. one day his truck was stolen. when the insurance agency found out his key was in there, they denied the claim. bad deal all around.

My truck didnt come with it either, I purchased the OEM Ford add-on keypad. maybe worth checking out for yourself. Had it for almost a year, works great

Larry, you are right, I added a code since you cannot change the original. I also read in the manual where you can get the code by using both keys that came with the truck.

I was not aware I could get a non-chipped key made just for the sole purpose of opening the truck door.

Now will have to figure out a stealthy place to put a hide-a-key just in case...

I will have to get used to leaving my keys locked in the truck. I do like the idea of not having to carry them but have never had that option so it is a little unnerving locking the door with the keys inside.

Good responses guys, thanks a lot for taking the time to give me some feedback.

I don't often lock the keys inside either my F250 or Transit T350 van with keypads, but don't hesitate to do so. Neither one has ever not unlocked from the keypad, so they have been extremely reliable.

My Transit has 3 keypads, so chances of all 3 not working are even less.

If either vehicle was stolen and I had left a key inside I would be an absolute fool to volunteer that information to anybody.

If the thief happened to be caught and say so, why then I would know who the thief was and I could take care of things myself...

The add on key pads sold by Ford use 3M automotive tape to adhere the key pad to the door. There is no drilling nor cutting to install.

They keypad is one of those things that I didn't know I needed before I had it. And now I don't think I could live without it.

I can get into my truck 24/7 whether I have my keys or not. It's great if I'm out mowing the yard and I want to get my sunglasses or something. I don't have to go in and get my keys.

I was locked out of my house once. Went out without my keys, my wife left the house, I came home, no keys, no phone. I used the keypad, got my door opener, crisis averted.

When I used to go mountain biking a lot I would hide the keys in the truck and use the keypad. One time, ~18 years ago, I had another truck and I was carrying the keys in my backpack while I rode. I got done, opened my backpack, keys were gone. Since 2004 I never had the keypad not work for me.

I don't like to lock my keys in the truck at the grocery, or the mall, or anything like that. I'm afraid someone might break in and find the keys. But I do use the keypad ALL the time.

Coming out of the quick-stop, drink in one hand, bag of snacks in the other, I can't easily reach into my pocket to get my keys, I just open the truck with the keypad, set my stuff down, then pull out my keys. Really handy.

2017 and some 2016 Ford vehicles (2016 SD not included) will require the key pad to be programmed for the vehicle via the Ford IDS.
