Bought a '93 Bronco XLT with the 5.0L. Replacing the steering gear box and the PS lines. The existing PS pressure line does not have the pressure switch port. Under what circumstances did Ford use the switch? I'm finding that I can get the line either with or without a pressure switch port. Wondering if the PO replaced the line at one point with a line that doesn't have the port. I guess I could dig around to see if the wire harness is hanging loose around in that area. Maybe someone could clue me in on why some had the switch and others did not.
the 5.0 had one. it only worked when you are running the AC and sent a signal to up the rpms a bit.
The thing is, you can buy the high-pressure line with or without the pressure switch port. I've looked all over for a harness that would suggest it once had a pressure switch and I can't find one. I'm wondering if Ford figured a different way of determining when RPMs should be increased and that is why they make two different lines one with and one without the port.
the 5.8 never used or needed that line thus having both available. only the 5.0 or perhaps even the 300-6 needed that.
my 88 bronco with a 5.0 had that setup. my 94 bronco with a 351w didnt. regardless i wouldnt worry about it.
since your changing out the steering box, go track down a 93 ford van and grab the power steering pump and bracket. its a far better PS pump than what you currently have in there and will run much quieter also.
My 1993 302 was the same way...no pressure switch but did have the wiring for it. I thought that the previous owner just replaced it with the wrong hose, so when I redid mine I added the hose with new pressure switch. Honestly, I cannot tell any difference in how it drives, but I figured if it caused problems I'd just unplug it.
The wire to the switch comes off the main wiring loom that starts near the air filter. Here it is in front of the oil filter...
and here's the switch. The wire comes from the large wire loom running left-right at the top of the picture...
Interesting, I'm going to go look at my 1993 351W and see if my harness has the connector for it as well. Might be a handy upgrade with big tires down the road, especially if those big tires are in mud or rocks.
