DEF problem

So my new 2016 F450 sends a message: 500 MILES LEFT ON EXHAUST FLUID............. so I fill it up and am surprised it only requires about 1 gallon.
Then I started the truck and it says: EXHAUST FLUID 471 MILES LEFT.
So I take another short drive hoping things will improve and now it says:
EXHAUST FLUID 462 MILES LEFT. Any ideas as to what's causing this?
I am not happy about the prospect of being shut down in 400 miles.
thanks for helping.

It sounds like the sensor is has failed. Before it strands you get to your local dealer and have it corrected/replaced. Being a 2016 it should be under warranty.

I'd take it and have it reset. It is confused.

Knowing about how many miles you have on the tank helps.

once reset don't fill again till it gets around 200 to empty. Then do a complete fill. That has been the best way for me.

1 gallon wont reset the stupid sensor. I had this problem on my '14. Try putting 2.5 gallons in, worked on mine.

one gallon is all it was able to take. It is full. It was only down 1 gallon when the 500 mile message went on.

Oh ok. Like said, probably a bad sensor or maybe some reset at dealer can be done.

While were at it, how many miles of "normal" driving does a tank of DEF last? I just hit 1100 miles on mine.

normal unloaded def should last upwards of 7500 miles. About the length of the oil change.

Loaded I see around 4500 miles.

unloaded is more regens and less def.

Loaded is the opposite.

Is this due to when loaded the exhaust stream is getting hot enough to go into "Passive Regen" when required?

Mine was a '14 XL. A message would show up on the cluster screen when I hit the 500 till empty mark. It would stay on until I filled it with at least 2.5 gallons.

Yes, most of the time when I tow my exhaust filter percentage stays at 0%.
