I have a 1973 F-100 with 42,000 miles,a 302 engine, and a 2 barrel carb. When I go to start it in the morning the engine knocks for about a minute or so, I was wondering if I should be concerned. I just replaced the fuel pump, if that matters.
yeah i see what ya mean my tranny makes a noise i thought was a bad axle bearing but an axle bearing would make noise all the time,.
what weight oil do you use?
10w-30, and thanks man. I have been reading the forums a long time but just recently started posting, due to the fact that I was encountering problems on my truck that hadn't been posted on here yet, and I didn't know what to do. I inherited it from my grandfather, with only 42,000 miles on it, so far it runs really well besides the turn signals, which is a perplexing issue.
Mine does absolutely nothing. Both the flashers and the bulbs are good, grounds are too, not sure what to do next.
With a DVOM check the voltage on the pigtails. Sometimes they rust out/wear down and go south. Check for "springiness" on the pigtail seat, too. Other than that, its time to chase wires back to the steering column - could have a problem with the white switch in the column.
As far as the "knock" goes, does it sound like a rod knock? If it is, time for a rebuild. A cam that has a somewhat flat lobe would make a slightly different "knocking" sound. I've had cams that would make a rapping noise upon startup, for a few minutes, then the noise would go away. Also time to pull a few lifters and take a peek at the lifter feet - to see if they're still convex.
How about a piston slap? That won't make a knocking sound but it's clearly audible.
Thanks filthybeast, whatever the knock was has went away, and cleaning the contacts on the turn signal switch did the trick. The truck had sat for years before I inherited it, so maybe it worked itself out
