I want to do the Toyota power steering box conversion on my 48 Ford. I spoke with Midfifty's yesterday and they have a waiting list for the steering box. They do have some informative instructions about the steering box which helps some. They indicate you need 11/16 with 36 splines from a 80 to 87 4x4 and a base with 4 bolt holes. I've found some steering boxes on EBAY but want to search locally. Does anyone have a clear picture of the proper box or even better, is there a number stamped on the proper steering box?
IMHO if you are spending >150.00 for a used/"rebuilt" toyota box and buying the mount, you would be better off buying the newly manufactured CPP box with integral mount that Classic Haulers/Mid Fifty, and CPP sell. If you do buy a used box (this is a tough unit so most used boxes are usable as is), be sure to get the two hose connections that go into the box with it.
I was told to go with a 1979to mid81 4runner,made my own bracket and used the pump from a toyota as well. myn looks the same asthe photoes showen. the key seems to be makeing a adjustable pitman arm. i took the toyota pitman arm and heatedit up did a bit of forgeing. removed the ball and made a taper, then used a tie rod with internal threads.
this way i have the box centered when wheels strait. a ways from roadtest.
