been looking at some parts for my fe so i can run around while i save coins and hunt for goodies on my cummins swap and happened across the Davis unified ignition hei conversion for my fe so my question is this, are any of you guys here running these if so how do you like them? my original distributor works just fine but i have to have some head work done and i figured while everything is appart why not upgrade from points and join this century.
I have one on my 460. The reason for the swap was the wiring rats nest under my hood and I wanted to clean it up. It has worked flawlessly. If you type HEI in search you will see all the pros and cons according to our members here.
I swapped a HEI in my truck after having intermittent ignition problems. I talked with a few friends who are mechanics and got different answers from each of them. I swapped the HEI in and eliminated a lot of wiring and the problem was gone. I think the only draw back is I had to grind my t-stat housing down to clear the much bigger distributor and when I swap my t-stat out I will have to pull the distributor out. But I'm still happy with it and the much cleaner wiring under the hood.
is it worth the money in your opinion? 350 bones is a decent chunk of change for me....
Yes I think it was worth it. A. For the cleaner wiring, and B. For the easier starting. Plus they curve the distributor for the weight, rpm, cam, etc. My main reason was P.O. Hacked up wiring with continued problems throughout the ignition system due to that.

gotta love PO's huh? i keep finding ghetto that i have to fix or remove on my truck.....
The above brings up something I forgot. You may have to clearance your water neck for the cap. I ended up buying one of the flat sided necks and grinding a small amount for clearance.

I bought one of the cheap offshore units off of Fleabay for $69 and run it in my 360 FE. It arrived ready to plug-and-play. It claims to have a lifetime warranty. I am not holding my breath on that but it seems solidly built and has worked flawlessly so far. (your experience may vary)
