Brake Question

My brakes sometimes feel like the rotors are warped. The problem is that it isn't consistent. I remember how the original rotors warped and they were crap so I put some drilled and slotted rotors on about 150,000 miles ago. Currently but not all of the time it acts like the current rotors are warped, the steering wheel will move back and forth, feel the shake in the vehicle. But today running a few errands at lunch, there was no wobble etc. I might go ahead and replace the rotors/pads but want to be sure that is the issue. Could it be the hydroboost on the 7.3? ABS?

Anyone run across this before?

Often what people blame on warping is actually deposits from the brake pads. These can be sanded off but shops often charge about the same as they would for turning so the difference is often immaterial unless you are doing it yourself. But from your description of the steering actually wobbling I would inspect the steering components.

Since you said your steering wheel moves back and fourth, I agree the issue is in the front. As pirate4x4_camo said, put a dial indicator on each rotor and see where you're at. It's possible that both rotors have run-out and the pedal feels best when each side is in phase and the worst when they are opposite.

Does the problem happen mostly when you have been breaking a lot and the breaks are hot? Could it be a caliper sticking?

I agree about checking calipers. My experience with rotors has been to change them as part of a brake reline. If the wheels are not torqued to 155-165, its not a matter if its going to happen but when. It's just a whole lot of weight on what I think are undersized rotors. I am not familiar with hydroboost but any shaking I start experiencing, the rotors are history. You been braking for too many elk, deer, cows, antelopes, prarie dogs and horses??

I'll try to check them this weekend. I don't slow down for prairie dogs, the others, maybe!
