So driving over the pass last weekend, I noticed as I reached about 15 psi on my boost gauge the needle started to stumble/flicker and I could audibly hear a "pffsssfftst" at that same time, back down away from 15lbs boost and the noise goes away? I am leaning towards a boost leak, it sounded like it was coming from the driver side anyways. I hate to just assume it is something, and mindlessly throw parts at it, on the other hand I know that is one way to start replacing old worn out parts.... So I am thinking start at ordering some new CAC boots from riffraff, anything else I could consider? Could be a worn out spring on the wastgate? Thanks
I never noticed loosing boost but I could hear a whistling noise on my 6.0l and it turned out to be a crack in the feed tube coming up to the turbo on the drivers side. Seems to be a typical issue after enough miles especially if the pipes have been removed for other work.
I was somewhat pissed I wasn't told to replace them when I had the motor bullet proofed.
Check all your boots, pipes, and clamps. It could just be a clamp or boot is loose. Upgrading would not be a bad idea though.
Copy that, I will double check when I get home. I do recall there being a little bit of dirt/sootiness around a few of the boots so maybe its that easy, would not be bad to replace them like you say.
I don't see his sig on my crappy computer haha. I'm betting it's surge then. My f250 had it till I changed to the wicked wheel, prolly a better option now huh?

Along with a boost leak, I too wondered if it was surge, that's why I asked those questions above.
I clicked reply right after he posted, walked away while typing my questions, then came back later and finished my post. When I clicked post and saw you had posted during my delayed response, I saw you thought the same thing.
Were you towing anything? Loaded in the back with a lot of cargo?
Any turbo upgrades?
Stewart
Well we had just got back from Vacation and driving home from Pdx airport. All six seats full 4 adults, two kids, and all our luggage? Does not seem like a "lot" of cargo for 3/4ton? But this is the first time hearing it. we were going over Mt. Hood, maybe a 6% grade at the time. Stock turbo as far as I know or can tell, a Garrett.
Not familiar with turbo surge, and yes the Chip was installed by the PO, 6 position TS as far as I can tell, I would like to send it out to gearhead to have it reburned.

Put it back to stock and see if it stops, usually surge happens only with a hot tune. Mine wouldn't do it on my 40hp tow tune but on 80e or 120 race it would.
Mine was not that bad, it was fairly intermittent right at 15lbs of boost, it sounded exactly like the first video starting at 1:38-1:47 - I never heard that other high pitched fluttering like they had? When I backed off and went easier it went away, so maybe it was a little turbo surge but nothing as bad as they were experiencing.
Shoot, now listening to it again after 1:48 it might have been doing a little fluttering like that end part... Sorry it was a 10 hour day of flights, with a 3 & 5 yr old kid, then driving home at 9:00 at night for 3 hours so it was a long day...
