power steering pump
I have lost 5 power steering pumps in last 6 months in my 1997 Aerostar. The leakage always occurs thru the seal on the pulley shaft.
Does anyone have any literature on hydraulic circuitry for the power steering. Or is there any releif or bypass vale which would need adjustment.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.
Thanx
The other thing I would suspect would be overheating the seal when the engine is first fired up after the pump is installed. If the pump is low on fluid, the seal could overheat. When you install the pump, you should turn the engine over with the starter but with the fuel pump and/or ignition disabled so that the engine won't run. Then turn the wheels lock to lock to get the air out of the system (the front wheels should be in the air). Then, stop turning the motor over and check the fluid level to avoid getting air in the system. Repeat until the fluid level stays constant.
I am wondering that if the fluid, on turning the wheel gets restricted in line and that stoppage and constant churning of pump builds up excessive pressure right with in the pump and shoots out thru the "pulley seal". This could be due to a bypass valve or a flow control valve(if there is any) or seizing up of the plunger/valve momentarily. I have the manual but that is no help at all.
The poor rebuilding of pumps could also be correct , but my OEM pump suffered the same failure, thru that pulley seal. But after 42000 miles as compared to 2 or 300 miles each with the rebuilt pumps
A complete hydraulic circuitry for the pump fluid will certainly help me diagnose this problem. Any one has it or could perhaps refer to me??
By the way thanx for your help Mikeman, it was very kind of you.
If not that then I would look to the Cylinder that the pump goes into. Maybe it's not circulating the fluid through the pump just out of it.
I would also suspect fluid contamination. Do you have an inline filter installed? A filter is mandated by most pump manufacturers. Check those little pieces of paper in the box that most people ignore and throw away.
Pumps also require that you fill them with fluid and turn the pulley over by hand a number of times to fill the pump passages and lube the seal BEFORE you put the belt on and start the engine.
