Hello, I have a 1990 F-150 straight six 2wd. Would a ZF5 bolt up to a 300? What else would have to be changed on the truck? Would the computer have to be changed? Would this be a fairly simple swap or very difficult? Please give any ideas, pointers, and instructions with what else might need to be changed.
ZF5 will bolt up as long as you get on from another 4.9L or smallblock. More than likely the computer would also need to be changed as the E4OD is computer controlled and I know most other fords have different computers for manual and auto's. Besides the obvious (tranny crossmember, pedal assembly, hydrolic clutch assembly, etc) I don't think there would be anything special that would need changed. Maybe someone else will be able to give you more details.
I removed my E4OD for a manual tranny in my 1991. There is no computer problems. The check engine light will come on when you unplug the harness from the computer, but the engine will run fine. To get the truck to start, you will have to find the two neutral safety switch wires from the gear selecter switch on the tranny and twist them together (or you can run them to a clutch pedal switch). Also at this time you should find the two reverse light wires in the same switch to later hook to the new tranny. I think that the only place that you will find a ZF to fit your truck would be in a F250 with a 351W. Anything smaller will only have the Mazda M5OD. Also the ZF is a tall tranny and you need the center floor pan that goes with this tranny for clearence. You will also need a new driveshaft.
I just put the M5OD into my truck (had to get rid of the 4 speed) and I would recomend not fooling with used parts and get a brand new master, slave and connecting line. The master and slave are available from everybody so shop around for the best price. The only place that I could find the line was from Ford.
Sorry. Typo. Do not unplug the harness from the computer. I meant that when you unplug the harness from the TRANNY the engine will still run fine, just the check engine light will be on.
