I have a 1994 Ford F-150 4x4 with a 4" Rough Country Suspension lift and a 3" body lift, however when I change from park to reverse it takes like 5 seconds to switch to reverse. At first I thought it was my trannie giving out, but I checkd it out and everything is fine, then I noticed that there is slack in my rear-end. While in park I can turn the drive shaft about a half inch in either direction and in reverse more then that, it isnt so bad in drive but it still turns slightly. I understand that it shouldn't be doing this, but I am new to rear end repair. Should I replace the entire rear axle, or would just changing the rear end gears fix the problem??? please help- your devoted ford owner
btw as soon as I shift from park to reverse/ drive you can see the shaft respond immediatly, but it doesn't being moving until the shaft quits turning on the rear end then it starts to go.... thanks again
any other input would be greatly appreciated, that trannie changes gears fine, I know it is the rear end because in park, you are not supposed to have and play in the drive shaft... ty though
Every vehicle I've ever messed with had a little slop in the rearend. My girlfriends ranger has a lot, probably about one third of a turn on the driveshaft. We have an 88 F250 at work with a C6 and it would take a while for it to get into gear. You would have to sit there for quite a while letting things warm up before it would go in. It was a transmission problem.
