Where does the coolant go?

When the engine is working hard and the head (s) unseat, where does the coolant go, in the oil, to the atmosphere or both?
There are times when I am pulling heavy ( 18 to 20K+) pulling up a hill from a stop, and I can hear the engine working hard, then I later check the coolant level and it has drop.
Where did it go?

The pressure in the cylinders is higher than the pressure in the cooling system so the pressure bleeds into the cooling system through the head gaskets and you get really high pressures in the cooling system. This causes the degas cap to vent the pressure and coolant "pukes" out.

You could also be burning the coolant and would get a sweet smelling exhaust.

Or you could have a leak that is spilling on some hot part under the hood and burning off as it drips.

My coolant level in degas bottle varies sometimes it is at min line, sometimes it is lower than it, I don't really give it too much thought, unless you see the white residue all over cap, or notice it is always empty, I would not troubleshoot it

Cold, sitting for a coule days, after driving it will get around min line, or a tad over, I used to mess with it, adding to make it to min line, but I noticed it would puke out of I over filled it, so I stopped messing with it, this is an aftermarket degas bottle, original was just nasty looking, so I think the sticker is too high

Are you adding coolant to keep the level up? Mine varies when it's running, warmed up vs cold etc. I alway check it cold and before cranking it up.

Maybe starting see a cracked egr due to insufficient coolant cooling and leaking back into your intake. If so, not a good thing for long as the crack will continue to grow and added coolant going into the intake will hydro lock the engine eventually.
Pull your egr valve to see if it's wet.

Good call. I forgot about the egr cooler as mine is deleted.

I just replaced my egr cooler with an upgraded one. I was always having to add coolant and it wasn't dripping anywhere and there was none in the oil, so it had to be going somewhere. I pulled and checked the EGR valve and it was a gummy mess so the EGR cooler was leaking.

I hope you also changed your oil cooler as that's what cause the egr cooler to go bad originally. If not, an upgraded one will help...until it too cracks due to high temps.

Yes, i did. If you're going to take the intake manifold off, you should do that.

I put an upgraded EGR cooler with the welded stainless pipes in it and a new, upgraded oil cooler.
