problems with radio

when I removed and replaced the clip for the wiper linkage a while back I disconnected the neg. on the battery, now the radio just gets static.

it is a stock radio, 1997 E-250,it was fully operational am/fm when I got the van, then ice tea spilled on the radio I think and the green led light on the radio doesn't show up anymore and the fm stations quick working the radio was stuck on 1 local am channel and that's it.

When I pulled the neg. cable of the battery and then put it back on I get nothing but static now?

For that early of a radio mixed with ice tea it could be done now. It might be still operate but one of the programming features (like tuning and saving a station) has most likely been affected.

Disconnecting the negative batter cable would erase stored info like pre-set stations and the clock but those typically can be reset without issues.

I had a very old TV remote (1985) that took a milk hit----immediately failed and never again worked at all. Just like your radio it wasn't liquid-proof.

Those stock radios are all over eBay for way less than $100, sometimes free shipping with decent return policy. Checking your local salvage yards might get you a better deal.

Good luck with this!

i have a couple auto cd palyers from other cars, how hard would it be to remove stock radio in ford van and replace w/ a cd player? I have jvc and alpine. or would I have to get a special one for it?

What about trying to get that local am channel back? see I will explain, got the van a couple years ago right?, ok the radio worked fine no problems, then tea or pop I think got on it. this obviously did something in terms of no fm channels and the display light went out, however I got 1 am channel.

I would like to get the whole damn thing working again but if I can get that am channel back on I guess I could live w/ that.

singing to myself is getting old then again maybe not...

thanks for advice

so for like a little over a year the radio was stuck on the same am channel, that was it couldn't get anything else on. so when I removed the neg cable from batt. to work on wiper motor, when finished I reconnected the neg cable , now that 1 am channel that I had on for a long time? now nothing but static. maybe I will see if I can get a replacement at the junkyard.is this a big deal to change out?

I have no idea what's happened to your existing radio---nothing you've posted so far in any way begins to explain why a 19 year old relatively cheap automotive radio has stopped working perfectly.

There are two hoop shaped tools inserted into the visible holes on the radio front, once they bottom out you simply use them to pull straight out on the entire radio chassis.

There will be the main wiring harness and antenna cable attached, those need to be removed. At that point the radio should be completely free of the dashboard.

After 19 years, iced tea, and only one AM channel, I think you've proven your fidelity! Pun intended. If your singing voice is anything like mine, you deserve a new radio! Don't worry, you can still keep the old one in your van...for a wheel chock.

A couple different manufacturers make them, they look like this:

Amazon.com: Advanced Tool Design Model ATD-5621 Ford Radio Remover Tool: Automotive Amazon.com: Advanced Tool Design Model ATD-5621 Ford Radio Remover Tool: Automotive

You can usually also find them at Bestbuy and Walmart for 7-10 bucks. Or you can make yourself a set using coat hangers. Honestly I'd just buy them though, if you screw up the little mechanism in there it makes it that much harder to get out.

Basically you just stick them in and I've found if it doesn't release right away that pulling outward from the radio face tends to help.

I have used a thick wire coat hanger and bent it with pliers to work. It has to be a think wire as the thinner wired coat hanger won't work.

Even then there is some juggling to get radio disengaged and out. The tool will likely work better. However you are going to have to wait to order it.

Those shown in the Amazon link are what you need---can be found locally for less than $10 almost anywhere auto parts are sold; O'Reilly's, Advance, AutoZone etc etc etc.

Those are designed specifically to release stock radios quite easily. Never thought about the coat hanger trick but for me using the dedicated tools work perfectly. Insert them and the radio chassis slides right out.

If needed I can post photos of them fully inserted in a radio chassis.

The coat hanger wire is a bit crude. However in the late 1990's I was unwilling to pay a tech $25 to remove the radio in my '96 Mark VIII and the tools were much more expensive then. As to Amazon (and other retailers) well it was open I just don't think they had the tools then plus I didn't have time for that thing called the world wide web.

Seems a bit expensive to me and there were no others listed on ebay. If you wanted to drive in silence a little longer another may come up.
