Brake conversion

Gentlemen,
I need to rebuild the brakes on a '96 F-350 SRW axle. This will be a semi-show vehicle when back on the road so I want things to look real nice. Both backing plates are badly rusted (one is also bent from damage sustained when it was being "pulled" at the junk yard) .. Here's the problem .. FORD has discontinued the part numbers, most dealers that I've contacted have depleted their old stock (nothing in inventory) .. the big part warehouse operation don't show any inventory and those parts that I've been able to find on-line (eBay) don't appear much better than the ones I already have. Today I was told that it would be relatively easy to change hubs and convert to later model disc brakes .. it can't be as easy as the guy made it sound, or can it? I know that the stud pattern is slightly different but I haven't bought wheels for the project yet so that isn't a problem .. does anyone have any information on this change .. maybe a full set of instructions (with part numbers) was compiled by someone and now can be downloaded from somewhere ... HELP!!!!

I believe it is possible to convert to the Super Duty discs, but you'll need all the hub, all the hardware, and you'll have to convert your front axle over to the same pattern as well.

My thoughts

Conversion to SD brakes would be problematic. Unless you go full boat and use the SD solid front axle and dually rear, there would be a butt-load of fab work involved. Not to mention the fact that you would have to go to 10 lug wheels. I'm not sure you could re-drill the hubs for 8 lug 8 on 6.5" pattern.

Also the frame width might be an issue, too. I'm not positive but I think SD frames are 34" and an F350 non-chassis cab is 37". There might be less fab work involved to use late E350 van rear disk brakes and parking brake assembly. At least the lug pattern is right to start with. The caliper bracket might be modified to fit the Sterling axle with some work, since it iss coming off of a D60 axle. Still not straight across swap but it might be easier than using late model Gen 10+ F350 or Gen 8/9 Super Duty parts.

You might have to use the van master cylinder, too. The truck MC has a residual pressure valve for the drums that will make the new rear disks drag and burn up.

Just my $0.02 USD worth.

Hi Rays..,
Wondering if something has gotten lost in translation .. the contemplated change would essentially convert an early '98 (drum brakes) SRW axle to a late '98 (disc brakes) SRW. .. no issues with model (F350) or chassis/frame width, as axle housing would stay bolted in place for transplant.

You would still have the fab issue on one end or the other, unless you would be okay with different rims front/rear. The lug pattern is different for OBS trucks and '99 and newer F350 SD trucks. The newer trucks are metric bolt circle. No 8 lug OBS came from the factory with rear discs.

You would have to re-drill the rear discs to 8 X 6.5 or use '00 and up E350 rotors. Also, your setup would have to be good to use the parking brakes from the SD axle. They are little brake shoes inside the hat of the rotor.

A word about these so called 'bolt on' kits - they typically use a Cadillac or equivalent passenger car caliper, not a truck caliper.

If this is a show truck, not meant to do real work, knock yourself out. If it's a real working truck, either do a '00 and up E350 van disc conversion or keep the drums.

OBS rear disc brakes

I used the 2002 SD disc rear. Geared the same as my front and the calipers are not staggered but are both on the rear side if axle. Just re-drill the hubs and use the rear van rotors. Flip around the shock brackets and your done. If you ever want to use a SD axle in the front all you have to do in the rear is replace the studs back into the stock holes in the hub and use the stock 8x170mm rotors.

You use all factory Ford parts that are available anywhere in the world. You will have to also need a SD or OBS F-SuperDuty master and 3/16" to 1/4" tubing adapter for the brake line. I have the Hydro Boost setup and this is the best setup for the buck.
