I checked with all of the national brand replacement companies and $240 was the best I could find. I then checked Craigslist and found a local guy that does replacements for $180. Then, I stopped by a locally owned tire shop at a Mexican store and asked if they knew anyone. They did. Final price was $155.
I always carry glass coverage on my auto policy, and with Geico, it runs me about the cost of one windshield per year. I might have to re-think this coverage cost.
The last time I replaced mine, I got them to put the Superduty logo'd one on it. The ones with the Superduty Logo on the 2005's and up run $80-$100 more if I recall correctly. I too carry windshield on my insurance coverage so I didn't come directly out of pocket when I did mine.
When I got my last one replaced by Geico, I "upgraded" to the newer "soundscreen" style of windshield which is supposed to provide more sound deadening. I was willing to pay the additional upcharge for the upgraded glass, but Geico covered it at 100%!! I cannot tell any difference in sound, though.
All windshields are not created equal. There is a very large company who you should stay away from. There are some companies who sell aftermarket windshields which ARE the same as sold to Ford and the other manufactures just their own label. Just make sure you are buying from a OEM approved manufacturer.
Do your research, you have a lot invested in your vehicle.
Don't be fooled by a OEE (ORIGINAL EQUIPMENT EQUIVALENT )
Well help us out here, what is the NAME of the large company we should stay away from?
If it don't say:
Pilkington
PPG
Crinamex
Vitro
St. Globin
Carlile
Mopar
Run and hide as it may not be SAFE!
You will note the Toyota OEM windshield bought from the dealer. You can buy that same windshield from a certified AGRSS installer for a fraction of the cost. The only difference is the name Toyota is missing.
Mine needs replaced. I need a high quality, USA made windshield.
Another logo is not important to me. The truck already has several on it.
The important thing is to find a AGRSS certified installer. They will only sell you a quality windshield.
The big issue is the vehicles with airbags use the windshield as part of the seat belt restraint system.
You have to think of your family and friends who ride with you. In a lot od cases that airbag is all that will save their lives. Crash test are conducted with OEM parts. If you use a Original Equipment Equivalent part, it is not crash tested and will not meet the standard of the vehicle as manufactured.
FYI, I worked 30 + years for two manufactures of auto glass which we designed and tested to meet the standards as set out to the auto manufactures by the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Council. We sold this glass to the new car makers as well as to the replacement market.
The purpose of AGRSS is to ensure the replacement industry is complying with these same standards because too many lives were lost to sub-standard installations and No one was policing the industry. One of the largest manufactures / installers has elected not to participate in this program and train their employees to their own criteria and not the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards.
Another thing, you have the right to chose your installer regardless who your insurance company uses to process their claims. It's the law!
