Just getting Started with a new project truck:
Bought it from a Hazlenut Farmer who spoke mostly Spanish. Got a title with their paperwork at the DMV and now I am the proud new Owner.
So Far: wheel bearings, front and rear brakes, new rear yoke flange on differential, new front U-joint, new springs on front, front end aligned, remove tailgate and install Canopy w/barn doors....love the robust way it drives. Still am not sure I am done with vertical height adjustment......more is better right?
I spent Friday evening putting on a Dual Steering Stabilizer. It wasn't terribly difficult, but was a few minutes work.
I got a mechanic friend to drive it Saturday, he listened to it and drove it and said that the four wheel driveline was working great.
So...new U-joint front, new pinion seal rear differential, and installation of a dual shock steering stabilizer to eliminate bump steer.
I went to move the truck, ran up around the block and saw some smoke coming up the defrosters. It got slowly worse until I pulled up at the house and began frantically searching for a fire extinguisher. I grabbed some channellocks and took the battery connection loose and finally found a fire extinguisher and put out the dash fire.
I just got it out and just felt like ****.
I had to travel that night and just walked away from it in the driveway. Kicking myself right now for taking on a project.
Thx. I saw red glowing come up behind the dash head lite and window wiper switch area. This is where the fire started. It eventually became an open flame while we frantically attempted to put it out.
I will NEVER again be with out a fire extinguisher, EVER.
So, Truck has survived the fire, I had comprehensive insurance, I called and put in a claim. They totaled it and wrote me a check for it minus the deductible and salvage price. In the end it is in the shop and TODAY they begin installation of a new dash, new instrument cluster and a new wiring harness.
New Windshield, New Wiring Harness, New Dash, New Instrument Cluster, New switches and lots of little bitty nagging stuff.
The bill was stout, but I get to pick up the F 150 after work today. I am going to drive it and enjoy myself!
Plans to put additional work include repair of the rear gas tank by addition of a new sending unit/pump.
Once that is done I hope to be able to put in a winch, winch bumper, shackle points front & rear, and perhaps a CB or 10 Meter Band Radio. I want to have good communication with other wheelers when trailing with them.
Put in a new sending unit in rear tank and now have both tanks working!
Kinda thinking about ordering a 38 gal tank from LMC Truck and installing in rear, they have adapters for the sending unit and strap bolts to make it work with my truck.
