Truck has been sitting for a week and half.
Drove for about 30 minutes today, arrive, while backing up can smell my brakes burning. Get out, walk around, find the one brake that is hot. It is my right rear. Tow it home...
I think I have replaced this caliper before, about 3 years, bought from Federated. Seems odd for a caliper to seize up that quickly.
Is there a way to test the brake line? I would like to make sure it's not the brake line and it is the caliper before I spend money and replace. Any known problems on the rear calipers for this truck?
There is no way to test the brake line, at it's age I would just replace it, actually both sides to keep everything balanced. Your caliper issue could be a bad caliper, not real common but not unheard of, I had 2 seize on my '03 on the same wheel within a year of each other, replaced with a NAPA premium and all is good 5 years later. I do flush my brake fluid every 2 years to help prevent the problem. Also you could have a frozen slider pin, that is a some what common problem, I grease mine with synthetic caliper grease about every 2 years also. If you replace the caliper I would make sure that the caliper you use comes with the mounting bracket, they seem to have fewer problems that way.
If you think that a failed brake line is causing this by keeping pressure in the caliper after the brake pedal has been released, you can try this. Jack up that wheel and pump the brakes a few times. If the brake is now dragging, crack the bleeder screw on that caliper to relieve any pressure. If you get fluid released under pressure and the brake stops dragging then you have something holding pressure, could be a bad hose. That said, I've replaced many, many calipers because they started sticking, have never had a bad brake line/hose cause this. Not saying it doesn't happen, but...
