Why Explorers are outfitted with V-8s when the Ranger would run like a raped ape with the V-8. And the Ranger might actually make the use of it when hauling a bed full of stuff.
Simple economics.. Explorer is a bread and butter vehicle, and Ranger is a poor mans F100. Ever see a cheap Explorer? Also EPA fuel economy fleet averages play a big part in it. As a tech, I HATE working on V8 explorers.. cant find room to do anything but crush your hands or burn your arms.
Im really surprized you can get a 4.0 in a Ranger, I guess Ford felt sorry for ya's.
Overhead Cam engines are always better performers than OHV equivalents.
I agree with everything you say Homer, except the part about the Ranger being a "poor mans F100". I think most people who buy Rangers can just as easily afford an F-150...they simply don't want one.
Also, I believe the Explorer is heavier than the Ranger and that is one reason why it gets a V8...the Explorer also is generally harder on a 5R55E tranny than a Ranger is.
You are correct, I shouldnt have characterized the Ranger in that manner. There is a Niche market for every vehicle or they wouldn't build them. Rangers can do a lot of work more economically than the larger gas guzzlers.
