I'm looking for some input on how you guys have mounted a radio in your Excursion, Kind of hard to mount it to the dash with it being plastic. Pls post pics of your instalations
That's a good idea for the remote face, The one I'm looking to mount is a KENWOOD TK-981 that is a little heavier. Looks like i'm going to have to build something custom as well
We have a good 927 mhz repeater system here in austin that is connected to other clusters nation wide via allstar.
I used a mag mount that sat center of rear ( by the third brake light ) so I only had a couple of inches of cable exposed. This setup worked very well with very low swr's and was able to talk all over the world with just 100 watts.
I never got into 2m with repeaters etc.
The plastic is a little flimsy but will work. If you can handle the extra distance the "hook" under the cup holder is mounted to a metal support member and is a very good mounting spot. There are several places to run power cables through the fire wall but seeing them on the engine side was tough and you have to contort yourself in weird positions to sometimes see them on the dash side.
I had a custom car stereo shop install a NMO mount for U/VHF in the center of the roof and they ran the cable inside the trim and out from behind the spare tire (at the time the rig was mounted in the back.) Parts and installation was fairly cheap. A little over $100 IIRC. Read up at K0BG's site for anything you ever wanted to know about mobile antenna, rigs, etc. For FM repeater work as long as you have the antenna mounted correctly and good RF grounding all the body part bonding isn't necessary. It does provide a huge improvement for HF work, though.
I built a bracket to mount the radio inside the console and put a speaker in the cubby under the cup holder. Out of sight, out of mind; I had one stolen already that was mounted on the cup holder. The wiring runs under the carpet to the firewall. The power feed is direct to the battery. I use a Diamond NMO antenna mount that attaches to the lip of the hood. I think there are pictures of the antenna mount in my gallery.
Simply mounted to the front of the console, nut/bolt/large flat washer, even with the bulky TYT I'm trying out right now, it's holding fine with no issues.
