My Explorer won't shift out of park. Starts up just finished but won't shift. Looked underneath as a friend was trying to shift it out of park. Linkage on the side of the transmission barely moves. Any idea on what is going on or what happened.
See if your brake lights are working. If not check the fuse.
Edit to add, if your brake lights are working theres another fuse to check. The fuse list in your owners manual will probably show it as the "shift lock actuator".
Brake lights inoperable. Both fuses good. Found where the problem was. Apparently someone in the past cut both wires going to the brake light switch. One of the butt connectors came apart and was causing the problem. New butt connector installed. Problem solved.
There was a revised brake light switch to address other issues. I hated that the revised switch was sold with butt connectors for the exact reason you mentioned. When I installed mine I soldered the wires and protected with shrink sleeving.
Discovering that your wires were spliced is a good sign that the more reliable, revised switch has been installed.
