Question Rear Axle Options

I need to change gears on my '96 F-250 rear axle, seems the easiest thing to do is just replace the axle. Anyone know what other options I have other than getting another Sterling out of a junkyard? Will a Dana 70 or 80 bolt right up (and speed sensor work?). I'd love to find an axle with rear disc brakes.

You could try a sterling off a 2000 or later super duty. they have rear disc brakes and i'm sure you could make the rest fit.

BUT the bolt pattern is different. It's still an 8 bolt but they changed the bolt circle diameter. Feel like carrying 2 spares? Plan B is aftermarket axles.

Why replace an axle that you know with one that you don't? I just don't get it, not to offend anyone.

Scenario 1: Rebuild the current one and you know you have a brand new set of gears with a 6month/unlimited mileage warranty(any good shop will give at least that).

Scenario 2: Replace with one out of junkyard with unknown mileage (30day/3000 mile warranty) and on day 60 it junks out on you.

For rear disc, there is a company that makes conversions, I don't know the name of them, but saw a thread on here a few weeks ago where someone did that and I am pretty sure it was a Sterling 10.25". Only problem with rear disc is when they get wet, you have no immediate stopping power.

That's my opinion and I don't mean to offend anyone. Good luck on the path you decide.

Look HERE for a rear axle in your area. It will give you an idea on the price. I looked something up here and then on the junkyards site and it was cheaper going through the original site than the junkyards.

Say What?? The whole point of disc brakes is that they work better, much much better in the wet.

Explain to me then why after driving through a puddle it takes longer to stop. 70% or so of braking power is done by the front brakes. Maybe it is just my trucks, but I know you have much more brake fade when the brakes are wet.
