I have a 89 F150 4x4 w/4.9L I6 T-18. I hadn't driven it in about a week. Today I got in and it seemed to be dying at idle 100% of the time. I can keep the engine running at 1500+ RPM but it seems like there is an intermittent miss and sometimes drops to lower RPMs with no change in the throttle.
Any suggestions of where to start would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!
I was only able to keep it running for about 10 minutes, it has been exceptionally hot around these parts too. It seemed to have the same behavior, I had to keep the RPMs high.
Interesting, I got in this morning, started it and it ran like a champ for a 10 mile drive.
OK - I pulled the codes here's what I'm working with:
Current:
51 - Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor signal is/was too high – ECT
34 - EVP – EGR did not respond properly during test – EVP
In Memory:
63 - Throttle Position Sensor (TPS) signal too low TPS
51 doesn't concern me as there is an aftermarket temperature sensor installed. 34 has been around too. I'm thinking code 63 may be the issue here. Thoughts about troubleshooting this?
My buddy has fixed a lot of problems on rigs simply by cleaning the contacts on sensors. Or ever simply unplugging and plugging them back in. Also there is a thread on fuel injected 300-6 where they installed a plate with small holes behind the EGR. I'd look into that and see if the symptoms sound like what is happening to you.
