Has anyone had a problem with those posi lock rocker arm nuts chirping. I've had an ongoing problem with this chirping noise on a new motor that started after about 500 miles. I've finally narrowed it down to these nuts. If I just touch the chirping nut with a wrench the sound goes away. I've tried greasing the stud and nothing seems to work. I did the adjustment for preload and then ran the allen head down on to the stud, then tightened the nut and the allen head together about 20ft/lbs. This is on a 300ci straight six with fully adjustable valve train and new cast rocker arms with screwed in studs. I'm getting good oil pressure and I can see the rockers filling up with oil. I know it's the nut because if I replace it with one of the crimped type of nut the sound goes away I've also tried some of the spare posi nuts I had as extras. I would leave the crimped nut on but the stud is to short and does not come out the top of the nut so it is not engaging the crimped part and can be spun off by hand. I'd rather not have to replace all the studs since they are all new.
The proper method is, loosen the allen head then adjust the nut to the right preload. Then, while holding the nut in the same position with your box end wrench without moving, tighten the allen head. This keeps the adjustment in the same place while the allen head is tightened to lock it in. The adjustment nut and allen head shouldn't be turned at the same time.
I did a search about installing these posi locks on the web and several of them said that you should turn the nut and the allen screw together for the last part of adjustment to lock it down tight. The reason being that you can't put enough torque with the allen wrench alone to keep it tight. I noticed that the first time I tried just tightening the allen screw that they loosened up a bit after running for awhile. I know as with all things on the web they are not neccesarily correct, but the logic seemed reasonable.
