One more response from my bud--I mentioned the lower shock mount breaking and I thought to ask if parts were common to the E450 and the answer seems to be "yes" so bigger front springs, if you need, them, would kick up the GAWR:
"I forget the actual number, but E450 Frt GAWR is over 4000# and the axle I-beams (and radius arms) are common with E250 and E350. I think the wheels might be shown on the GVW sticker. They are not common with E450 since 450 gets the dual wheels. Bottom line, he would likely be OK bumping the frt springs one-up.
The basic front end geometry hasn't changed much on E-series. Don't forget that there were E-550's too. Think about the extra front weight on the RV's with beds over the cabs and the moving truck (cutaways) with the storage area over cab. If you want to upgrade to stiffer front springs, re-read my previous post. You could order replacement springs using the spring code for the 7.3 diesel. Or if you want them heavier than that, I went with TTC-2814 (Tough Truck Coils) which are also 1/8" larger diameter than stock. No sag now and I've got a little higher than original ride height. For E-450's and RV's they make the TTC-2815 good for front weight of 5,000 lbs! Don't use those on an E-350, they'll rattle your teeth loose!
So, here's my new (installed 12,000 miles ago) coil springs.
