DPF Test Pipe question

I am an auto mechanic but new to owning a diesel as well as maintaining one, so my question may be on the dumb side, however I want to get as much information and advice as I can before doing any work. I have an F350 6.4, and I plan on doing the DPF/EGR delete, I have everything except the test pipe replacement for the DPF/CAT assembly, my question is, if I perform the DPF/EGR delete tune, will it be safe to run the truck without a pipe until I get the test pipe in? thank you for any input on this subject.

Long story short....no....dpf will clog and you'll cause severe damage to your engine due to excessive back pressure.

Even if I remove the exhaust where the DPF begins? Baisically I'm wanting to know if the exhaust ends at the manifold, will there be enough back pressure to operate?

Oh sorry i miss read what you said....sounded like you wanted to tune the truck and leave the dpf in place for the time being. If you remove the dpf and install a dpf delete tune you'll be fine.....Diesels don't require any certain back pressure like gas motors do.

Sounds like you and I are doing the same thing. I am however going to wait till I get the pipe. Let me know how your situation works out.

Should the EGR be replaced or just by passed ? How does that work ??

Same with the DPF ??

As far as the tuning...do you have to buy a tuner or can you just borrow one ?

you have to have a tuner, it is "married" to the truck. once you load the tune, you can unplug the tuner, or leave it plugged in as a monitoring device. if you go with the cheaper option, such as the SCT 7015, you will have to purchase a set of custom tunes to get the options you are looking for. If you go for the expensive ones, like the spartan, I think that comes ready to play.

The coolant lines to egr can be plugged off, but removing it completely is not a very hard job and is probably better in the long run

ginomacino is right once you load it, its VIN specific, but the EGR removal is optional based on how you feel. If you want to know absolutely sure that no circulation will occur through the EGR, then removal is probably the best method, but if your engine is sound, the EGR delete disables these components. So really up to you and personal wants. I've gotten the GearBoxZ DPF-R, Which deletes the DPF filter and regen setting without tripping the check engine light as well as disabling the EGR and CAT and giving up to 70 horsepower gain and up to 20 MPG total, as far as my research, You do not need to completely remove or even block off the EGR. You do however need to remove the DPF filter to prevent the system Catching Fire due to excessive smog, excetera. I will definitely let you know how It Turns out after removing the DPF and running no pipe

The GearBoxZ DPF-R is a completely reversible tuner, so when it comes time for emissions, all you need to do is re-install the DPF/CAT and EGR(if removed) and uninstall the tuner through a programming sequence, get your emissions done, then you can restore it to your tuned state.

I should have qualified, I'm wanting to remove the smog stuff hoping to get better milage and performance. I drive very little down here except for 50 mile trips to Cabo shopping 1-2 times a month then 2 months on the road pulling our 5th wheel up north in the summers.

Noise shouldn't be alot louder if you have the strait pipe because your still directing exhaust through the muffler, it will be louder, but not enough to get you any flack. As for the price, that depends, I got a $400 tuner, but you can spend up to 3000 for just a tuner, the test pipes are about $300 without bungs to $400 with bungs, and the EGR delete kit is about $200. If you do the work yourself you will save a ton on labor. I'm rounding up all prices to account for any tax or shipping fees you may run into

The most you will spend on a tuner is around $1500... For a livewire expect around $900 and an x4 is around $700 (both with canned and custom tunes).

If you do a full straight pipe exhaust expect to spend around $2200 total if you have a shop do the work. And no 6.4s aren't loud... With a full 5" pipe my truck isn't much louder than a stock 6.0. At wot obviously its going to bark because the veins are open on the turbo. But the turbo system really does the most toward keeping these trucks quiet.

If you just do a delete pipe you really won't be that much louder unless you step on it.

To update on the outcome of running no exhaust pipe, it's going good so far, seems to have less lag, a minor hiccup in the idle but not serious, now I'm watching my mpg to see the gain. I'll update that status as soon as I know.
