Over boost help!

Hello everyone, like my title says I'm seeing to much boost with my 6.0l on part throttle. Ill try to give as much info as I can because I want to get this fixed before I damage the engine. When I floor it wide open the boost will sit right at 28psi and it runs great but if I'm on cruise or part throttle it seems to have a mind of its own especially after it shifts or when climbing a small hill. Yesterday it hit 35 before I caught it and I'm sure it would of hit 40psi. I'm reading this on my auto meter gauge mounted on the pillar. Since I've got the truck I've flushed the coolant over to ELC, replaced the oil cooler, deleted the egr and cooler, changed all oils and filters and cleaned the turbo out. Also installed a SCT canned tow tune mostly to get rid of the EGR engine light. The unison ring didn't look rusty or seized but I cleaned it up anyways. Although I will say the little slot where the pin goes into the unison ring was worn funny so I took a little emery cloth to it just to smooth it out. Before I put it back together I moved the ring and vanes back and forth. They seemed to move free but now I'm worried I should of replaced the ring or maybe just got a rebuilt turbo. I really don't want to do head gaskets on it. Oh by the way it's a 05 excursion with the 04 built engine and around 210 000kms on it. Thanks in advance.

did you get the wrench light to come on or read the codes to verify over boost happened?

Tuning programs are sometimes designed to fool the truck into thinking they have less boost to prevent the wrench light from coming on, while the actual gauge (like you have) reads true boost values.

I did get the wrench light to come on ( forget the code maybe p0299 or something) before the turbo cleaning and tuner while pulling my 30" camper. Since the turbo cleaning I haven't but I've been watching my boost levels and trying to keep them down.

P0299 will show when the turbo doesn't appear to do what was commanded. Either over or under boost.

And it shows for more than 4 lbs and for longer than 5 seconds.

Ok thanks. So should I just order a new turbo. Yikes they are expensive.

Before spending more money, I'd ensure the unison ring moves freely now. You can inspect movement thru the silver looking plug on the turbo. If there's wear as indicated, in the pin slot, I'm not sure you shouldn't replace the unison ring altogether.
Does the solenoid work that operates the ring?
Replacing the turbo shouldn't be an option unless you've got lots of money to toss at it.
Send me your old one as I can always use an extra.

Only way to tell is to pull and disassemble for inspection.

So I've done some reading and some people say that the MAP sensor or the exhaust back press sensor could cause this so I've ordered both. Hope one of them fixes it.

So here is a list of the things that could cause over boost. Please tell me if I'm missing anything.
Map sensor
EBP sensor
Sticking unison ring/turbo vanes
Sticking or failed VGT solonoid

I need this thing fixed ASAP so let me know what I'm missing. Thanks

I had an overboost condition and what fixed it was putting in a new turbo. I think the insides were a little rusted which prevented the turbo from doing what the computer wanted it to do. Since it was under warranty I didn't mind a new one. You can probably take it apart and clean it yourself. I think there are guides on how to do it and the kit that you need.

Could be as simple as cleaning and checking MAP tube, EBP, tube, and then cleaning the sensors formMAF, IAT2, EBP, with sensor c,eager, then running the relearn for the VGT.

Ok how do I run the VGT relearn? I should have the new Map sensor and EBP sensor today. I will clean the EBP sensor tube and replace the hose going to the MAP sensor although it looked fine last time it was off. Thanks

I may be wrong and if so, need correcting, but having either of those sensors bad, including a blocked EBP tube or a cracked and leaking MAP line, won't create overboost, just wont let the turbo spool up properly.
Don't want to sound negative, but I think you're wasting more money.
