tire sizes

hello, so yesterday at the local gas station I was talking to a guy who has a new, nice looking GMC 1 ton 4x4 nondually truck. we started talking about milage and he told me that going up 2 sizes and adjusting it in the onboard computer he was now getting 22mpg.
so I know this isnt an apples to apples kind of thing, and I do know that for example on my F250 it is geared to haul... but has anyone got real data on getting back down to a 3.55 gear adjusting tire size? has it made a difference ? especially if it is just a DD and not a work hauler. yes we all know if you go too far milage gets worse, but I always found for a non-work truck that the 3.2-3.5 rear gear ratio or equivalant eith by changing gears or tire size was a sweet spot for MPG.
right now at 13K I get about 17-17.5 mpg unless I am driving on the interstate and then I get a tad more.

thanks Fert

I'm confused. An SRW F250/350 comes with either a 3.31 or a 3.55 rear gear.

Get a 3.31 rear and 20" tires and you have a more optimal highway speed driving truck.

I had a 1-ton, 3500, SRW Chevy Silverado, LTZ, 4x4, and on the highway I could pull 20 mpg and it was bone stock. In the city, I was getting 12... Just like my 2005 6.0 Ford, 2011 6.7.... (and a bunch of other vehicles). Can't compare it to where I live now, my driving is very different now.

MPG is very driver and environment driven. At least in my experience. I like to look at what do I personally get in each vehicle vs. what my neighbor does. I am 100% positive that we don't have the same drive or even drive our trucks the same way.

You know I figured something wasn't adding up. I got to talk to him again and the specifics he was saying was more and more sketchy the more questions I asked him. The old too good to be true.... Sorry for the confusion

Good thing he didn't have a Dodge or he would be getting 35 mpg pulling a 15k trailer, up hill, against the wind at 75 mph.

I get what I get - I've owned all big 3 pickups and a Toy truck (Toyota).

He might just get his 22 mpg, it isn't out of the realm of possibilities. Some get that (or close) in their 6.7 Fords... I just don't.

I was confused on how you got a 3.73 or higher on a SRW truck. Only way I know is to put your own gears in.

Just a note: I have 2011 f250 6.7 3.55 ratio and it is towing a 11,000 lb. 5th wheel. When in tow mode I am getting 9-11 mpg, but when I am not using the tow mode getting 17-18 (only use tow mode on hills or heavy traffic).

I just figured out about tow mode in heavy traffic last weekend. It really works slick!
