New tranny correct decision?

So I talked to both Brian and John but both of them are backlogged 3-6 weeks. Someone I know referred me to a local tranny shop that has been in business for 40+ years. My understanding he's putting in a 4R100 Tugger Kit. I get a year warranty. It'll be installed by the end of the week. All new parts inside. I requested an cooler that is over sized for the truck but will bypass the radiator. One specific question; as I understand this tranny will be converted to an "on/off system". Is that good? Attached is some documentation the shop gave me in case anyone wants to look. It looks old and he said I would get more once it was done.

For the most part, what you have is the updated parts that eventually made it into the 4R100 like the piston and bore clearance.

As for the Tugger? I have no clue.

Very bad idea. The radiator cooler is the main cooler for the trans. There are larger coolers that they might install that will not remove as much heat as the stock cooler that they are going to replace, not to mention all the heat that the radiator cooler would remove. You're setting yourself up for a seriously overheated transmission.

I recommend replacing the radiator with a new one, and one that has a cooler. Then replace the stock aux cooler with one from a 6.0L truck. Then you'll have a bulletproof cooling system.

Not if the PCM is a PWM system. You will have very long lockup times if you install an on/off system where the PCM isn't expecting one. The 4R100 was on/off only in the early '99s. After that they were all PWM.

The conversion to "on-off", he is referring to (shown in his pdf attachments), is the TransGo aftermarket TCC lock up valve that was specifically designed to replace the OEM PWM valve parts and work with PWM programming. It is a companion part to the Tugger kit and meant not to be installed without the kit upgrades. I used the TCC Lock Up upgrade in my own transmission and that of others. It does work as it says.

No need for that cooler. You can get a 6.0 liter 26 row or 31 row(either type will work, they cool almost exactly the same amount in side by side comparisons) for less money if you look around and it will cool more than you should ever need. If you look around, you can find one for about $175.

Unfortunately all the parts are in but he did clarify that cooling will go through both the radiator (which is new) AND the new cooler. Essentially it is a very large aux cooler.

He double-downed on the on/off system and as mueckster said he's installed them on countless farm/ranch and oil field trucks. I don't know what to expect operation will be like. I am excited though, parts are in today. I'm getting a deep pan and he said that after he takes the drum out if there a re mechanical diodes he'll have to update that.
