I am trying to diagnose a weird noise on my boss's 2001 excursion.
It has a V-10 and recently had new engine and tranny mounts put on.
But I am looking at this and it seems odd to me. I googled it but no luck.
Does the piece on the bottom look right?
The weird sound he is hearing is hard to explain. It happens when he hits
a bump. It sounds similar to a something falling thru a tube that fits snug
so it rattles as it fall down the tube if that makes any seance.
Kind of what happens when you use primos fond can call for you hunters.
I am stumped. It feels like its coming from under the drivers feet.
btw, it has new shocks, and the hubs and bearing are fine.
Rotors and brakes are also new and appear to be working right.
The part you have circled is a factory installed harmonic vibration damper. There are 2 or 3 of them under an EX.
Not too sure about the noise, you can disconnect the front sway bay end links to see if the sound goes away, they can be noises if the links or bushings are worn. Another thing to check that could make sense based on your hunting call description is a bad shock, since the shock design and action is similar to the animal call.
The shocks were already new before it started. I replaced them again yesterday
but still does it. Bushings are new also. It started after the new motor and tranny
mounts were installed. Maybe that harmonic balancer is doing the opposite of what its supposed to do. I'll check the body mounts also.
The weirdest thing about this is that sometimes the sound last for a second or 2, and
sometimes it does it for up to 5 seconds.
I highly doubt it's the balancer. Even with the balance shaft, if the balancer were to fail you'd still be getting a constant vibration that increased with RPM.
Does the duration of the sound related to the severity of the jump/jolt, or is it randomly associated?
