I'm a newbie to engine work. I need to check / adjust the valves on my 86. My repair manual is less than helpful. Can anyone tell me where to find instructions and tech info?
It's really pretty easy......assuming they are hydraulic adjustable.....
Pull the valve convers & start the engine......
with the engine idling, (one valve at a time) loosen the locknut on the adjuster ( visually obvious), rotating at 1/4 turn at a time, loosen the adjustment until you hear 'clacking"...it's loose, then tighten, slowly, 1/4 of a turn at a time until the clacking is gone...then slowly tighten an additional 1/4 to 1/2 of a turn (no more than 1/2)....you will typically find the engine will run "sweeter' at a certain spot....you'll know when......tighten the lock nut and you're done!
What engine? You shouldn't have to adjust the lash on a hydraulic lifter. Maybe the cam is worn or has a bad lobe or the lifters have collapsed. Does truck have good oil pressure? Have you had the valve cover off and checked for sludge?

Not true....hydraulics come in both adjustable and non-adjustable versions.......I'm assuming because of his request, he had adjustibles.
Ok. I stand corrected on the adjustable part of it but still would check oil pressure, wear and sludge buildup. I wouldn't expect one or two to to be out of adjustment.
