Identicator Light in Grille problems

Hi,

My 78 f250 and even my dad's 71 Mustang are having the same problem the bulb in the driverside front grille keeps burning out blue. I even changed the turn signal socket. I also cleaned the grounds and checked for shorts. Still blows both filliments, cracks or breaks the glass and turns the bulb blue.

What is going on? How do I fix this?

Only thing I can guess from what you described is check voltage at sockets. See if it is higher than 14 V or so. If so your voltage regulator could be bad and needs replaced. I had mine go out and my lights got bright and then burned two headlights out.

Make sure your fuses are sized correctly too.

Voltage tested the socket, here are the results.

Truck engine off, identicator light has 12v, turn signal goes 9v 5v 1v off

Truck engine on idling, identicator light has 14v, turn signal has no voltage.

Does that sound like a bad voltage regulator?

No that should be ok. When my voltage regulator went out I was seeing 18 volts on my aftermarket gauge. Lights were nice and bright for a moment then died. I have a 3g alternator.
Turn signal should only have voltage when signals are being activated.

I really don't know why they would burn out unless the fuses are oversized.

is yours and your dads light switch possibly dirty?
(i.e. dust and grime build up between posts)
have you tried replacing the turn signal switch?
or checking for a short in the steering column wiring?
or how about both relays under the dash?
is your ignition switch sticking in between the start and run position?
are you trying to use after market "brighter" bulbs?
Is it just your fronts that keep blowing? maybe you have a bad wire or ground at a rear or side light.
