I'm hearing a plane type sound on my 2004 f-250 6.0 and i also noticed the temp gauge needle went up but still in normal range and then went back to the middle range when slowing down or parked. I had a combustion test done and a leak test done and all passed. The reservoir tank had a leak and changed that before all the test were done. Mechanic did various run test and it didn't over heat but it did when i got it back. My guess is that the fan clutch is out but not sure. An autozone guy came out and looked at the fan clutch and asked me to turn it on and hit the gas and then shut it off. He noticed that the fan clutch kept turning fast and he said it's not suppose to do that. Help!
The coolant temp gauge is a dummy gauge at best on these trucks. If it moves above the "normal" range, its getting pretty hot.
If you did not hear the fan roaring at those kind of temps, chances are you need a new clutch fan. If for some reason you have the EGR valve sensor/wires unplugged, plug it back in. The fan will not work correctly without it being plugged in.
Is the "plane" sound something new or something that has always been there? If its a new sound, your turbo may be sticking and the added backpressure will increase the amount of heat. If that's the case, that is most likely why your truck is running hot.
Either way, you definitely need to get some gauges. A simple scangauge or bluetooth OBD2 device should suffice. You want to check VGT duty cycle and boost to see what the turbo is doing. You also want to watch coolant temp to see what temps you are running, as the factory gauge doesn't move until you get up to 235F IIRC. The bluetooth OBD2 adaptor would be the cheapest option if you already have an android device. torque pro is the app. you want to use with it.
Do you have a white crust around your degas cap? is it puking out of the cap? I have seen a restricted oil cooler do this it flashes the coolant. Check your coolant/engine oil temp Delta.
the only time the needle goes up if i accelerate quickly but if i'm on a street going 35 or 40 it doesn't really make the noise. I was told that if it was the turbo i would feel a difference in the performance and i really don't feel anything. I punch it and it takes off pretty good.
the noise doesn't happen when i first turn the truck on and take off but once it starts to warm up and the needle gets to the middle range that's when the noise kicks in.
Ok so I took my truck to get the fan clutch replaced and I did. But that plane type sound is still there in the gauge needle goes up but then it goes back to the middle range. So thefan clutch was bad but I don't think that was a problem. I don't know what else to do I mean I will take it to the mechanic again and he's going to run some other tests. Is there a test to test out the turbo to see if there's something wrong other than the VGT VCT that you said to use?

Not on mine. I plug in the adapter and it links with Torque, and waits for KOEO and then it is talking to the PCM. Left the adapter in overnight and got in in the AM and looked for it in the console and... oops left it plugged in, reached down and it was warm, it had power all night.
That is why I pull my adapter out whenever I'm not going to run Torque...
