While many say the Z cut/splice is the strongest way to do it, I can't say how many frame splices I have seen that are straight cut, and butt welded, with a fish plate. My son just stretched the frame on his Peterbuilt road tractor with the just mentioned method. There is a shop near by, that sell grain bodies that mount on trucks, that lengthen large truck frames that way every day.
