I need opinions thought i had a decnt cab until i started to tear it down. i though it would just need floor pans but i was wrong. the cowl has a line of rust from one side to the other where it meets the fire wall and at this point im unsure if i should cut my losses and find a new cab or keep going and try to repair it. im just afraid the more i tare into it the worse its gunna be. a rust free cab would be amazing for the right price
Theres a few nice running dents in PA. I saw a really nice one near Ft. Indiantown Gap 2 weekends ago.
Options for the cab: buy any reproduction metal you can, but the old out put new in. Then add sheet metal in where you couldn't buy reproduction/patch panels. Jeffs Bronco Graveyard, LMC truck, RockAuto, Dennis Carpenter all have replacement panels.
Option 2: Pull cab and find a replacement. Make sure t(if you're not reusing your doors) to pull the vin tag off original cab and install it on new cab. Fix what rust the new cab has, install with new body mount bushings connect everything and enjoy.
That cab is pretty rough, it can be saved but its a lot of cutting and welding. With allllll that rust I would check the roof right around the drip rails and windshield with a metal pick and see if it will puncture the metal. That's another bad spot for rust.
With time and work it can be fixed.
Yeah im afraid of what is gunna be in the kick panel because the knuckle head before me took off a visor that was previously put on and there are 4 3/8 holes in my roof and only god knows how long it was like that. but the drip rails and cab corners are good those holes in the roof can be welded over with a welding spoon to back it. its just bad from where the floor dips down to under the cowl. even underneath is solid in the back.
What's your plans for the truck? Restoration, don't bother starting on that cab. But driver or wheeler? Throw floors in it and rock in, most of that rust won't amount to anything for a while. I'm a "keep the project going" mind of guy.
There a guy in Massachusetts that has a bare cab (no glass paint expect primer) its been sandblasted and is in great shape. $1300. If I had the spare change I would buy it. He has other ones for $2000 ready to rock.
im planning on doing a semi restoration right at the moment and make it my daily driver i just turned 16 and hope to get it done here in a few months before the end of summer. i have a guy that is willing to sandblast my frame/ suspension for cheap. im paying out of pocket for everything (Not relying on my parents like most kids.) my plan is to basically pull it apart and paint it nothing crazy. but my budget isnt huge id be willing to pay about $6-700 for a cab and doors and would be willing to travel
If I see correctly in your profile you're in PA. Look the rest of the truck over very closely for any rust damage that may prevent getting a valid PA inspection. Figure minimum of complete brake rebuild, lines, hoses, etc. That series truck can still be had in rust free or minimal rust condition for a decent price.
