CAR AND DRIVER'S 5.0 VS. 3.5 EB...
#16
Just saw reports of shudder at low miles, failed oil pump at low miles...all during break in period on the 2.7L.
Kind of surprised how early this is happening but not considering its a clean slate design with a lot of new features for Ford. Hopefully these will be addressed...but considering timing chain issues are a problem up until 2015 on the 3.5L and several TSBs later to fix it, I won't hold my breath.

Didn't see those posts over there but that's a scary thought. I wonder if it's a bug in the s/s programming? I've seen people trick the s/s feature with a trailer light plug so it's disabled more permanently than using the dash button.

Rather than using an external plug, the start/stop switch can be bypassed easily.

Now I'm hoping Ford can get their stuff together and figure out start/stop before they launch it in every engine or whatever they are putting it into next. That's the worst part about buying a first year anything, especially when it's all brand new you are the guinea pig and you find all the problems before hand. What Ford and every company should do is if they are doing a huge change over like this is get a lot more people to test these things and not just fleets. Give them a wider range to look at for reliability problems. Have them test it out for like a year and then give a report back to Ford.

I purchased the 5.0L, mainly because the truck had everything I wanted except the 3.5L (dealership didn't have ANY EB's), I initially was looking at getting the 3.5L, but a couple of months and 3,500 miles, I really enjoy the 5.0L. Does everything I need it to do and does it well and the sound is amazing. Now, that being said, If I was to drive a EB powered truck, I'd probably lament my decision!

I'm not trying to say that the newer ones are affected by this...it seems to be something that develops at high mileage, so we won't know for another couple of years if this has been resolved. But there have been more than a few 2011-2012 5.0L engines that have failed around 100,000 miles. I wouldn't have predicted this when they were new, like everyone else I thought the 5.0 was the safer bet. It may be in the long run, we shall see.

There are some issues all over the engine spectrum and some may be a fluke. For instance, one of my customers has a 2012 Edge with the 3.5L N/A. At 69K miles the water pump leaked slowly and failed and flooded the oil pan and crank case. The engine is toast. They have an ESP on the car that goes way beyond their current age / mileage and Ford still wanted to push back on the engine replacement.

Car & Driver says the fake sound of the 3.5EB sounds better! Still hoping someone @ C&D will provide a link to the article....I got a response, but no one has acted on it.

3.5 sound? I have a 5.4 and my RV traveling friends have a 3.5eb. Inside the truck they sound the same. Quite. Unless I'm outside my truck or at a drive through with the window down I can't tell the difference. I do like the sound of a V8. Just saying with a stock exhaust there is not a difference to my old ears.
