Cam gear swap?

Ok folks we all know about the 5.4 phaser issues. Sure I could replace them and that might fix the problem for a while but where is the hot rod swap? Can I ditch the phasers for say 2v cam gears? Or perhaps V10 or maybe even 5.0 coyote cam sprockets?

All of this is in a 09 F350 for which high RPM horse power is a foolish pursuit and I need torque at lower rpm for towing, wheeling and long bush road trips.

Thanks

Have you looked at the cam phaser lockouts?

08+ phasers are much better then earlier years and much less prone to failure. You will need to tune the truck to modify the phasers but if they aren't broken I wouldn't waste the time it money.

I have and am still looking into various lock out options. The sct tuner would be a good upgrade as well but it won't delete the TPMS which is also on my list.

I would rather eliminate the phasers altogether if possible. Hell if I could swap on some 2V heads and an 04 computer I would be tickled! My 04 SD got over 20 MPG this one gets about 11 at this time.

Cam gear swap?

The mpg difference is more in transmission tuning then the motor itself. The 5r is always wanting to jump down to a lower gear to optimize performance where the 4r was very happy locking in overdrive and staying there. Even if somehow swapping out 2v heads or locking the phasers did increase your mpg I doubt the cost would be worth the gain. Plus you would lose low end torque so it might actually be counterproductive altogether.

From what I have read the lockouts help low end power. And this truck needs to stay out of overdrive longer. It is better on fuel in tow mode which is stupid.

As far as power train was concerned the 04 was a better truck. The 09 has better designed suspension and interior.

Phasers aside the 3v has more power, smoother power band and a far superior transmission so I'm not sure how the old drivetrain is better.

I've tested mpg on the same stretch of highway traveling the same speed and found no real difference in mpg between tow haul and normal mode. Around town, tow haul was much worse for mpg. I only use tow haul when towing over 6000# just to keep it from hunting for gears. I have a 08 with 3.73 gears, 35" tires, 2" lift, k&n air filter, superchips tuner, h pipe and dual flowmasters and get 10.5-11 city and 13.5 highway. Gears will be next and I'm sure a big help with power and mpg as I believe it will let me stay in 5th gear more

He asked if the 2v cams would fit. I didn't see the answer either. Maybe I missed something. I just threw away a brand new set I got with my timing chain. I think its worth looking into. Take some measurements and I bet you're right. They may work great. Timing chain and tensioners are the same so it would probably work.

Cam gear swap?

I did miss that. Thank you. Cams definitely won't work but I'm honestly not sure if a 2v cam gear is the same as the 3v

You can buy kits that will lock the phasers. They are inexpensive. Here is one example. I don't have experience with it and am just showing an example.

That sounds like the easiest solution. If I had a 3v I would do it. I don't really care about the couple hp lost or whatever. I like having my 2v just fine.
