2015 F350 Platinum 6.2L ticking noise on startup

My 5.7 Tundra did that as well but my new 6.2 does not, at least not yet.

My 2015 just did this a couple days ago as my wife started the truck. It had sat not used for about 2 weeks. Start up late afternoon on a warm day and I heard the same ticking sound for a couple of seconds and it went away. The truck only has about 2500 miles on it so far. Reminds me of a lifter sticking and figure the noise is attributed to oil bleed down. Hasn't done it again but truck also has been driven daily since.

I previously had a '97 Chev 2500 with a 5.7L where there was a ticking noise at startup, especially in cold temps after sitting, but that truck had 200 000 miles on it.

I wonder if the change to 5/30 like they have done with the 2016 would cure this?

I changed my 130,000m+ 6.2 to 5-30 my last oil change and I feel it's made cold starts a tad quieter. Purely subjective of course and could be placebo effect but I'll be sticking with 5-30 from now on.

Start up tick

So I have close to 400 miles since picking up my truck on Saturday, can't stop driving it. Love the truck so far, I have not had it tick on cold start up, but it suddenly has started to tick on start up after being warm and sitting for 30 minutes or so. I this normal also or should I be concerned? It is now doing this on almost every warm start. I can understand the cold start up and have had this on my 5.4 for many years, but never experienced it after the engine is warm. Thoughts, I tend to over think things and panic.

If the oil level is good, so are you!

Does anyone truly know what the ticking noise is? We can all guess a lifter, but it would be nice to know from one of the ford engineers what it is and why. The motor itself is noisy, from the loud injectors, to the fan, but man, shut those doors and it's quiet and smooth.

I bought my oil change stuff today. Motorcraft 5w30 oil and filter. I've always ran motorcraft stuff and never had an internal failure. I use to always change my own oil, and always added a bottle of STP oil treatment. So I bought a bottle this time. STP is good stuff. My FIL use to use it as assembly lube on 2300 dirt track motors that turned 9-11000 rpm on stock bottom ends for an entire season. Has anyone else used any in the 6.2? I'll report back later to tell if it's helped the warm start tick. I hate that, it's embarrassing when someone turns around and looks because your new $$$ truck is ticking on start up.

I totally agree with you on the embarrissing part of the ticking. I have come to the conclusion after many hours of research that it isn't harmful, and mine has gotten a little better. But I lost the Ford vs Chevy war with a friend who just bought a new Chevy truck, he came by my house to see my new truck, and sure enough a big ticking on start up and he just laughed and laughed. Hard to justify Ford product in that situation. After my 5.4 cam phaser issues I was really hoping for a quiet Ford motor, maybe on the next truck.

This is my first OHC engine. I thought they didn't have lifters?

Yes, they do. No push rods, camshaft lobes ride on the lifter and the valve is under the lifter.

On of the few issues we see with the 6.2 is valve issues, and I'm guessing it's not actually the valve, but the lifter that's the problem.

Mine used to do it on occasion but now that this thread is active again I can't say that I've heard it lately, maybe a year since the last time I've heard it 33K miles now.

I know that feeling, just do what I do sometimes, go a little redneck crazy on them. I have a coworker that bought a almost new platinum Toyota Tundra just before I bought mine. Paid more than me for a used truck. Beautiful truck, unfortunately he is a loud mouth bragger. A lot of us give each other a hard time about brands and throw jabs in, but he is annoying about it. After hearing how great his truck was for a couple weeks, and asking why I bought a ford, should have bought a tundra, he asked me how much horsepower my truck had. I just said I don't know(which I did). Another coworker said 411, which is actually the f150's 6.2. Well that tore him up, because it's more than his and he wanted to race. After telling him I didn't buy a 7k+ truck to race, I bought it to work and his truck may be a bit faster considering it weighs at least 1500lbs less, he wouldn't let it die. So I just told him, "I'm not going to race you, but we can hook up bumpers in the parking lot after work, I've got a full warranty, so if it tears up, so what. You better have it in 4lo." Well, he wasn't out there at quitting time, and I haven't heard a peep about it since. I didn't truly want to hook up, and I'm glad he wasn't out there. I've never done a tug of war, and think it's pretty stupid. But I(and several others) was so over it at that point, if he would have been dumb enough to hook up, I would have drug him all over the parking lot just to prove a point. Sorry, back to the topic at hand.

Ron no need to hook up in a tug of war. Just get a car trailer and take turns hauling each others truck. That should shut him up.
