Went digging around underneath looking for an engine number. Found this:
Wow...that looks a lot like a VIN number, doesn't it? CARFAX thinks so! See attached....buyer was less than completely truthful to me. Not necessarily a bad thing, I don't see why he tried to hide this from me. The guy is a former master technician for Kia, so he's more than capable of swapping an engine. Looks like the engine has a better recorded maintenance history than the car does.
Well since it was totalled in Sept 15, odds are it only has 100k on it or so...
Sucks that the seller was a liar and hope there are no skeletons hidden anywhere...

Yep, I agree with all of this. I sent him a text...there's no reason he even had to mislead me about it, I would have still bought it from him. I'm not afraid of an engine swap that's done correctly, especially since the CARFAX for the donor car shows so many oil changes.
He tacitly admitted to it. I just told him I was looking for information and that I wasn't upset about the thing. The response was "I would guess the engine was over revved maybe while skidding on ice or something". He said could have been a broken rod, but nothing visible externally.
So you wonder with a service history of frequent oil changes - did they also replace timing belt? Glad that it seems to run well. It sounds like it will always be a mystery as to why the old engine had to come out..

I'm inherently distrustful of timing belts. This one has a chain though...if it were the V6 model with a belt its replacement would be on the agenda.
Busy weekend! Spent a lot of time cleaning the house and leaning over a 6.0! Got the injectors replaced and truck is back up and running. I don't know if it's good or bad that I can replace them so quickly now. I'm bushed! Spent a nice evening cracking a cold one and grilling. What a beautiful evening!

Welcome to May!!!
Sounds like a lot of work... The last time I changed injectors on a diesel it was an old GM6.2... I think I spent more time cleaning the engine before I pulled them than I did actually changing them out..
