At full lock, how close are the tires to the springs, frame or anything else? What about stops on the axle itself, preventing turning past them? If you still have plenty of room, you could fiddle with a different steering box, or pitman arm to either change the travel of the arm, or extend it, causing it to move the rest of the parts farther.
Of course, fiddling with the steering geometry and equipment is a potentially dangerous thing to do.
Funny thing is that my '63 F-850 with wonky power-assist and a lousy radius is tolerable. My 1990 F-800 with power steering and a better radius is a dream.
With my F800's 237 inch wheelbase, city corners are an issue. I am just hoping to learn from someone else smarter who may have found a way to improve their maneuverability before I stumble towards a hoped for solution on my own.
Long wheel base trucks don't turn sharp, there are adjustable stops on the axle that you can adjust out to allow the wheels to turn sharper, but once the tires start touching the springs or steering linkage there's nothing more you can do.
With a 237" wheel base even if you get it to turning sharper all your going to do on those city corners is run the rear tires up on the curb.
My rollback also has a 230"+ wheelbase & I have to atleast half *** plan my trips if I go to town with it. Otherwise its looking ahead & paying attention.
I just bought a 1984 F800 fire truck on gov deals. it has 12000 miles and looks new in and out. paint still on harmonic balancer. I have favored fords all my life and now that I am retired decided to start a project. I would rather have a C model but could not pass this one up. am thinking about making it a daily driver because i like big trucks. It has a detroit fuel pincher and it is in top shape but i have heard a lot of negative thoughts on this motor. the things i would like to change are the top speed of 60 MPH. Oh it has a 5 speed manual trans and i wish it was an auto. also trying to decide what kind of bed to go with. The other thing is the hood and accessing the engine compartment because it is a problem crawling up the front because of my age. I know i am rambling but would like some opinions and advice from more experienced whether to start over or go ahead with this beautiful truck. Thanks ahead for any advice. also own and drive a 1985 F150 long bed and a 1986 F150 long bed 4x4.

I'm sure you will get more replies if you start your own thread on the subject rather than hijacking this thread.
Sorry if i was hijacking this thread that was not my intention. I have spent around 20 hours on FTE and am having a hard time making use of the forum. I was not aware that i had to start a new thread to get some answers but will try to figure out how to do that. the info that i have been able to gleen is so appreciated. to me it seams that this is a hard site to get around in for a someone like myself that has only been on a couple of years. Thanks for all help and i will try to be more site correct. Davidddavid
