Brown power steering fluid
The very end of that drain hose is soft rubber, and you can grab it with your hand to crush whatever is caught inside and let it fall out. Running a little water into the cowl can help this process.

PS Fluid. I like the trick with the drain **** in the return line!Mines been in there for 250,000 kms & it is not over noisy but it looks pretty disgusting. I've promised to change it when the temp gets above 0* c ,which might not be for a few months yet!!!! I think I'll go with the synthetic stuff; it might outlast the vehicle though.
My only problem at the moment is use of AF coolant at about 250cc/ week or 300 kms, but I might splash out for another radiator when the spring comes.

You have a coolant leak. I recently described the intake manifold leak on one of my vans. It looked daunting initially, but I managed to do it in a couple of days. But I didn't have to deal with sub-zero temps this time. (I did something like this on a 2.8 liter v6 in the middle of winter in Detroit many years ago, and I still have miserable memories.)
The only things worse would have been 1. Freeze plug leak or 2. Head gasket leak.
The pump still whines with the Amsoil Synthetic Mercon ATF. I cannot hear it whine while driving unless I slow down and turn sharp. I can hear it whine clearly while turning in park in the garage. But ... I just got brand new front tires which is a factor in the level of friction while steering. I am not sure if the power steering pump is quieter than before with the Amsoil synthetic mercon ATF in there. I never paid close attention to steering systems until this incident with the brown power steering fluid. I am so glad that I noticed it. If anything unusual happens in the coming months/years I will update this thread.
Like yours I can really only hear it at low revs & sharp turns, which is also when the pump is running at a slower speed. I dont worry about it....... my steering feels fine & it has no leaks (not for about 200,000 kms anyways).
