Good morning all. I've got a few questions about the heads. My plan is to keep a stock bottom end but upgrade the heads and exhaust. The heads will be gone through (I.e) valve job, port match and valve seals so the question is about the value spings and push rods. What type off valve springs? Can I use the stock springs? Will get news oem ones. The push rod length is the other question. I did some research and the stock 351w rods are long enough but want to make sure. Any advice is welcomed if I forgot something please let me know
I'll be using a kit from Trick Flow, TFS-2500100, it comes with seals. Summit has been out, but Late Model Restoration has in stock for the same price. For push rods, I've bought a checker & test springs rather than rely on just the used original ones. Some one posted that Alex's has good stuff too.
You know that the head bolts are different on a 302 and a 351, right? I have always HAD to drill out the head bolt holes on the GT-40 heads for them to bolt down on a 351.

The heads I have require a 1/2" bolts. I thought the gt40'S had 7/16 bolts. If someone can clarify this that would be great.
If putting Explorer GT-40 heads on a 5.8, yes, the heads must be drilled/reamed out to take 1/2 inch bolts.
Heads are going on a 351w but these heads ALREADY take a 1/2 bolt. Are head bolts different from regular 1/2 bolts in size? I know they are different in strength then regular bolts. I'm talking about thread size.
Guess you got lucky. Did you pull them yourself? See a bushing on the head bolts, using the larger opening head, requires a bushing that the smaller head bolt goes through?
Either way, they are what they are, if they are what you say.

Yes pulled them myself. I have another post showing all the stamped numbers and letters. No bushings from the head bolts. I just figured it came off first run explorer v8.
So I pulled out my 5.8 head bolts & tested them against the GT's holes. They're fine. Duh. Makes me wonder if the "P" heads are smaller. I've got a set of 302 head bolts somewhere, but can't lay hands on them right now. Tested the bolts (5.8) against my bolt/thread gauge. They pass the 1/2 inch hole fine, no where close on the 7/16th. Measure them with digital caliper, .495 just under head, necking down to .446 & (back to) .495 at the 13 TPI threads on the business end. And there were no bushings on the Explorer head bolts when I took them out either.
I guess as long as the dowels keep everything centered, we're good to go.
The v8 explorer where they the 5.0l or 4.9l. The reason I ask is that's what the app row 52 has them listed as (4.9) I'm figuring that's why there's an abundance of v8 explorer parts
