I have a diesel excursion 4x4 that I fully rebuilt the tranny on. After that, the truck ran great, BUT, the tranny would heat up going up a 10 mile mountain pass when stuck behind someone slow. Eventually it just stopped going, but when you shut the truck off waited a min, it would go again for about 1/4 -1/2 a mile before dropping out and not engaging. I parked it and installed a new solenoid pack, front pump & torque converter, but it still will not move in drive, reverse or 4x4. Anyone have any ideas? I'm at a loss and to pissed off to think!
Were all those parts just guesses? I think you spent a lot of money for nothing. Some diagnostics, or even some suggestions from someone with experience with this might have saved all the work you did. As you now know, it isn't the torque converter, the pump, or the solenoid pack. None of them could have done what you are seeing.
My suggestion is to pull the pan and valve body. Once the valve body is off you'll see three bolts in the worm trails. These can loosen and cause the exact symptoms you're seeing.
Thanks, I have a supposed "Transmission guy" that was working on it, but this seems to be a heaping pile of B.S. I will go take a look today and check. Thanks!
Just a thought, did upgrade the trans cooler or at least flush the old cooler when you did the rebuild? There may have been some gunk that passed into the cooler!!! Woods demanded a new cooler when I had mine done through him... Perfect time to put in the 6.0 cooler.. My trans never sees over 180 even when pulling the toy hauler!!!!
yeah fair enough thanks. Any chance the transfer case went out?
With the trans in park will the truck roll more than a foot? With the engine running and your foot on the brake to keep it from moving does it make a grinding sound when you move the shifter from D to P?
no it won't roll, but it makes this grinding whirring noise, like a piece of hard plastic or metal is grinding against a drive shaft as it spins, but the drive shafts aren't spinning. I have it on stands and drop it into drive, but nothing. I can hear the tranny shift, and rpms flex like it should work.
