Comparison Shopping

Hi guys, im looking for some advice. Im comparing a 2010 FX4 with 118,000Km to a 2012 FX4 99,000Km (sorry in canada)

They both have the V8 engine.

My husband has concerns with the 2010 due to the previous spark plug, celenoid issues. i have read lots of information on this and it seems it wasnt an issue after 2007, i have also read that after 2011 a newer motor came out.

my question to you is would there be a big difference in the 2010 vs the 2012 motor? both are the flex fuel not the EB.

i prefer the 2010 as its a full load leather, sunroof etc. but thats my champagne taste on a beer budget speaking out. i need to pick the right one with less chance of engine problems or i will never hear the end of it!! thanks

The '11-'12 trucks had issues with the V8 engines and apparently the transmissions also, judging by the recall that was just announced yesterday. I would avoid them. A '13-'14 would be best. But if that's out of your budget I'd go for the '10.

Or, get the '12 and buy an extended warranty with it.

But yeah, if the '10 is optioned the way you like it, you'll be happy. That year of the 5.4L V8 made a lot of torque just like the new 5.0L and I think you'll be fine with it.

the 2010 will be a 5.4L V8, which is a good engine, but not amazing. The spark plug problems were solved long before 2010, so that's no issue.
the 2012 will have the 5.0L v8, which has snappier acceleration, and has a very good reputation.

The difference in kilometers isn't a big deal. If they are similar condition and price, the 2012 wins hands down. As always, maintenance and condition are extremely important, and would be my first concern.

Good luck with your purchase. What part of Canada are you from?

Well said sir and likewise, if you've never owned a 5.4L or a 5.0L truck then you'll never realize a difference anyway.

What are you planning to do with the truck? If you are planning to pull a travel trailer, you'll want to compare the cargo capacity tags on the door pillars. All else being equal, maximum cargo capacity might be important. If you are just wanting a truck to transport materials for weekend household projects, the either should have plenty of capacity and physical condition and options will out. The difference in mileage doesn't mean a lot to the engines, but wear and tear on the driver's seat (especially) will normally be more obvious on the higher mileage unit.
Good luck with your choice!
