I have a 2001 f250 with the 5.4 I replaced the belt because of belt squeal and after replacing it the squeal is gone. now after the truck gets to its normal temp and I stop at a gas station for dip I will leave it running and when I come out it has this loud chirping noise it kinda sounds mechanical but it very well could be something on the belt drive. I am stumped it goes away after I start driving but I am kind of nervous about what it could be.
and the only time I hear it is while the truck is at normal temp and in park I have rolled the windows down and can not hear it while driving or at traffic lights. a part of me says it could be the fan clutch and now that it has a good belt on it I am hearing a sound of maybe the clutch going out or a pulley bearing starting to go out. I am at a loss anyone have any input or advice on where I should go from here?
It sounds like you are on track for possible causes. The thing to do next is reproduce the sound at home and narrow down its source with a stethoscope.
funny you said that I was about to head outside to do that. I am just waiting on the truck to get to normal operating temp and wait for the sound. but at first I thought it was low on oil because my father in law who I got the truck from never changed the oil in atleast 2 years and just topped it off when it got low so I was worried that maybe after 2 years of him towing and driving the truck atlest a couple of times a week and damaged something internal because I just changed the oil not long after I started hearing that sound and was afraid that maybe the fresh oil and filter had dislodged something that was causing damage on its way through the engine.
thanks for the advice I will go listen and see what I can find hopefully its nothing serious
well yesterday I let the truck get to operating temp and let it idle and I heard no noise that I heard before. I even let it idle for almost an hour while I was waiting at school for class to start and no noise I let it idle with the AC on for 30 mins and the AC off for 30 mins and it did not chrip or make any weird noise at all. now im confused on what the issue could be
You made the mistake of letting the truck know you had a stethoscope. You have to sneak up on it, otherwise you'll get a CND situation (Could Not Duplicate)...
Keep your stethoscope handy, the noise will return, you can count on it!
If it comes back hit the belt with a quick shot of the spray tire foam cleaner/shine. If it stops the sound it'll atleast narrow your search down a bit.
I'm going to go with a bearing on one of your pulleys is dying a slow death...I have had that happen on my old f150.
Or you had a squirrel hiding in there somewhere and he left... Hey it could happen. Lol
I heard it last night while I was in line at McDonalds but I couldn't get out and listen and my medical stethoscope would not have done me much good but from what I heard as it echoed off the bulding sounded like a pulley I need to narrow it down but I am about 80 percent sure that is what it is I had the same type chrip on my 91 jeep Cherokee right before the pulley broke and came apart while driving thankfully I was about to pass a parts store so I got lucky
Idler or tensioner pulley more than likely. Those 2 seem to be the biggest issue with the 5.4s in the earlier years. Keep your original pulleys and get the old bearings out and replace the bearings. Several companies are moving to plastic pulleys (a joke if you ask me), so having a second backup is a good idea
My dad ordered a idler pulley and tensioner pulley, both were brand new. Tensioner was a metal pulley. Idler pulley was plastic. So we stole the pulley from the plastic on and pressed it into the old metal one. You can find the bearings them selves, im not entirely sure where you can get them. Best bet would be to pull the original bearing and measure it and go from there.
figured it out its the tensioner pulley and when the fan clutch kicks in and puts a load on the belt or the ac compressor it gets louder I hear it with my stethoscope I can hear the chrip and I could hear it in the ear pieces of the stethoscope
