Truck started making a rattling sound yesterday. It's very sporadic and only while idling. Sounds almost like a socket behind a pulley but I know that is isn't the case. There is a also a rhythm that is sync'd up perfectly with the serpentine belt. Sounds like its coming from the front of the engine. Doesn't happen all the time, but it's annoying and concerning when it does. Any ideas?
did you loosen the belt and try to wiggle the pulleys?
I had a horrible grinding/rattling noise up front and i looked and looked and couldnt figure it out. i loosened the belt and tried wiggling pulleys and i could move the idler pulley. that one was my culprit. it would make the noise at idle and if i was driving it would make the noise if i came to a stop.
Yeah, I checked that first and all seemed well. My fan clutch has been locked up for a couple weeks now. It's really cooled off here lately so I decided to remove it until I get the replacement. After removing the fan and shroud I can easily access all the pulleys. I made sure everything was tight while in there yesterday. Truck sounds much better now and has a little more umph. The rattling seems to have stopped... It's been intermittent so far. Nothing felt loose but hopefully I took care of the issue. Might have been something on that frozen fan clutch. Never heard of that happening but perhaps. I'll repost here if the rattling returns. Thanks for the input.
do you have a/c, and does it work? I have found ALOT of times hearing that kind of noise with all the pulleys intact it turns out to be the compressor clutch, noise will come and go. If the ac worked, turn it on and see if the compressor actually engages, and if the noise returns or changes when it does engage.
